UVT Worklog

UVT Photo

I've been working on this computer for some time now, little bits here and there. The worklog is far from comprehensive, and there are mods that magically appear in between other mods... give me a break, this is my first mod... the next one (Zwei) will have a more complete worklog, maybe with links to tutorials on how to do that mod...

In the beginning...

...wait, actually, this thing starts from the middle... the whole idea of building this computer came when I moved and in transit, someone managed to mangle the drive cages inside my old case. Miraculously, the working components weren't damaged and I was able to just shove everything into a new Logisys Clear Acrylic case.

The Case

I also started with the following components (Yeah, I know most of them suck, but they get upgraded later).

Motherboard: Asus A8VE-SE
CPU: Athlon 64 3400+
Memory 1GB Kingston PC3200 Dual Channel
Graphics: Club3D Radeon X300
Case: Logisys CS888CL Clear Acrylic
Power Supply: Logisys 550W Clear Acrylic
Fans: Standard 80mm LED fans (came with case). 1 rear 1 side, 1 front Atomic Fan Grills
Hard Drives: WD 40GB EIDE, WD 160GB EIDE, WD 80GB SATA
CPU Cooler: Generic Copper Heatpipe (modded with custom fan and grill)
Remember, this is just the hardware that I started with. As I build a log for each mod, I'll include what pictures I have and an updated components table.

Tribal Fan Grills

I was bored of the drab atomic fan grills so I ordered some cool ones I found on ebay, they're a tribal pattern, and I think they go well with all the UV (they also reflect light from the UV sleeved cables)

They're so shiny...Fan Grills

Yes, this fan is outside the case... for now...Fan Grills

They sleeved the cables and made it clear acrylic and couldn't update the fan grills?Fan Grills

There's my custom CPU cooler... it was so ugly before!Fan Grills

Top Blowhole

If anyone's noticed, there's two versions of this case (CS888CL) One with a top blowhole and one with a side intake fan. I also noticed there's two versions of the power supply I'm using. The first is a 500W, with only the motherboard ATX connector wires sleeved. The upgraded 550W model is just the 500W with a sticker stuck OVER the old one (not even replacing it) and the other cables sleeved (at least they did all the molex connectors too...)

Anyway, back to this mod, I decided I wanted the side intake fan, AND the top blowhole. Out comes the trusty 220v drill and a hole saw...

Fan Controller and Sleeving

A fan controller was important when I decided to add more fans than i already had, because this computer is in the room that we sleep in. I scoured the net for a bay controller that would look good in my case and control my fans... I couldn't find one. I did stumble upon the Sunbeam Theta TP101 software fan controller though. This was a great idea from Sunbeam, and it's a great product. The price wasn't bad either at under $20, left me room to buy 5 matching blue LED case fans to replace my mix and match of LED and UV fans. I can actually load a preset in the SoftTheta software that came with the controller to reduce the voltage going to each fan or light. Yes... I said "or light"! The thing even comes with temperature probes that I can stick anywhere I want and have a fan spin up or down depending on the temperature reading. Hmmm... are LEDs getting brighter as my RAM heats up... well... not yet they aren't...

Fan Controller and Fans

As far as the sleeving goes, it's a never ending project. Every time I add a component, I have sleeving to do... I opted for a mix and match color scheme... whatever color I feel like using on the day. It's come out quite well, and I think the range of colors in the case look pretty good in the UV light.

That's all for now! (Feb 20th, 2007)

There has been more work already done on this mod, but that's all I have time to post to begin with. Check back soon for Case Handles, a Zalman CPU cooler and all the ugly stickers removed...

You shouldn't be seeing this...
